MANILA – In the face of growing public outrage, more senators are also now calling for the abolition of the pork barrel.
On Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano and Sen. Francis Escudero filed separate resolutions seeking to abolish lawmakers’ pork barrel or the priority development assistance fund (PDAF).
This came weeks after Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago’s filing of a resolution calling for the gradual phasing out of the PDAF.
Cayetano personally filed two resolutions on Thursday afternoon: one seeking to abolish the pork barrel system, and the other, to appoint former Sen. PanfiloLacson as special investigator in the PDAF probe.
“I want to take personal responsibility and make this really a crusade. I think the time is now. I think there’s a real good chance na ma-abolish talagaang pork barrel,” he said.
“All the senators and congressmen are feeling the people’s clamor nai-abolish ‘to,” Cayetano added.
In Senate Concurrent Resolution 196, Cayetano cited the P10-billion pork barrel scam and a Commission on Audit report showing that more than P6 billion in PDAF went to questionable nongovernment organizations.
