MONDAY, August 26 is National Heroes Day, a national holiday. It is a day where the nation honors the individuals who sacrificed so much for the country through their exemplars, and ven to the extent of giving up their own lives.
But heroes are not limited to these extraordinary individuals, for ordinary persons can also be heroes.
Ordinary Filipinos have a chance to demonstrate their heroism on Monday, prove their love for the country by occupying public plazas and parks to show their rage against pork barrel. The P10-billion pork barrel scam is so revolting that Filipinos here and abroad are very angry and outraged by the brazen stealing of people’s money.
A people power against the pork is called by furious citizens dubbed “Million People March to Luneta” and public places all over the country. This is the Philippine version of the “Arab Spring” or the “Jasmine Revolution.” Netizens are leading the call for public display of anger through Facebook, Twitter and other forms of social media.
Further fueling the anger of the public is the disclosure of Commission on Audit (COA) report on the scale and depth of abuse and theft of taxpayers’ money. COA Chair Grace Pulido-Tan was horrified by the extent of the robbery of the national coffers.
